Join YCLM for an inside look at the journey of Manitoba’s iconic Tyndall Stone, from quarry to finished architectural product. The tour will showcase how large stone blocks are extracted using specialized cutting, drilling, and heavy equipment before being transported for processing. Attendees will see how the stone is cut, shaped, split, and finished to meet architectural specifications using advanced machinery and skilled craftsmanship. Along the way, we’ll learn about the unique fossil-rich geology that gives Tyndall Stone its distinctive appearance and explore the history of Gillis Quarries, a fourth-generation Manitoba company working with the stone since 1910.
Following the quarry and fabrication shop tour, participants will have the opportunity to explore a full-scale mock-up of a masonry cavity wall assembly, focusing on the critical details found at the base of the wall. Guided by experienced masonry contractors and industry experts, attendees will examine the components that contribute to durable and effective wall performance, including flashing, cavity drainage systems, weeps, insulation, air and moisture control layers, reinforcement, anchors, and support systems.
The session is designed to bridge the gap between design intent and construction execution, providing a practical understanding of how these elements interact in the field and why they are essential to long-term performance. Participants will also have the opportunity to try their hand at laying brick under the guidance of skilled masons, gaining first hand appreciation for masonry craftsmanship, tolerances, sequencing, and constructability considerations. By combining technical discussion with hands-on experience, this session will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the materials, accessories, and detailing necessary to properly design, specify, coordinate, and procure masonry wall assemblies for successful project outcomes.
